Our eyes are vital organs in our bodies. Therefore, we must take the appropriate initiatives to maintain the proper care of our eyes to avoid becoming susceptible to various eye diseases and other eye conditions. Eye diseases can be caused by multiple factors such as dust, wind, cold weather, and bright light. In addition, research has shown that staring at a bright computer screen for extended periods may even lead to eye complications such as poor eyesight.

It is a natural process for eyes to become weaker as one grows older. However, with the correct care, eye deterioration may be reduced and possibly even reversed. A key approach to maintain and improve eyesight is to follow a proper diet and eat foods that are recognized as being beneficial for sustaining healthy eyes.  In the following sections of this article, we will be reviewing some of these foods that improve eyesight.

Foods that are Beneficial to Improve Eyesight

Carrots and Eggs

The most common type of food known for enhancing vision is the carrot. It gets its eyesight-enhancing properties from the chemicals that are contained therein.

These chemicals include beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene. Beta-carotene protects the eyes from the sun’s harmful ultra-violet rays, which is very good for the retina. Lutein protects the part of the eye, known as the macula, from damage by free radicals. Lycopene prevents oxidation as it is a phytonutrient antioxidant.

Eggs, whether scrambled, boiled, or fried, are very important in one’s diet. This is because they are a very rich source of cysteine and sulfur, which resists damage to the lens due to oxidation. In addition, the yolks of the eggs also have vitamins, zinc, and essential fatty acids, which are all very important for supporting healthy eyes.

Berries and Nuts

Another category of foods that should not be left out of one’s diet is berries. These berries, especially the blueberries, blackberries, gooseberries, and dark grapes, contain eye nourishing nutrients essential for night vision.

In addition, berries strengthen the eyes by reducing eye fatigue and preventing muscular degeneration. These fruits will also help sustain a healthy vision for the older population and are particularly useful in later years.

Most nuts, such as almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, and other nuts, are a rich source of omega 3 acids and vitamin E. Furthermore, they can help strengthen one’s eyesight and help prevent cataracts that may occur due to old age or eye infections.

Fish

Fish is also another important component of a diet that can improve eyesight. Fatty fish, such as sardines, tuna, mackerel, cod, and salmon, have omega 3 fatty acids in abundance. As a result, fish provide a wide range of valuable benefits for the eyes.

The omega 3 fatty acids are important for cellular health and help prevent the eye muscles’ degeneration as one increases in age. In addition, these fatty acids are advantageous for the eyes and are beneficial to the brain.

Fruits

Fruits should never be overlooked when one is selecting foods that improve eyesight. Fruits that contain higher amounts of Vitamin C, such as oranges, lemons, tomatoes, and guava, will provide the greatest benefit to our eyes.

Regardless of how you consume these fruits, whether it is as whole fruits or as juices, you will still gain the maximum amount of nutritional value for your eyes.

Fruits, such as pawpaw, mangoes, and pumpkins, are an essential source of vitamin A which is crucial for improving one’s eyesight and preventing night blindness.

Chocolate

Including dark chocolate regularly in one’s diet is also suitable for eyesight improvement. Dark chocolates have a component known as flavonoids, which help make the cornea and the eye lens strong by protecting the blood vessels in the eyes. To gain the maximum benefits of chocolate, it is advisable to consume the pure form of dark chocolate, which has a higher percentage of cocoa extracts.

Red Wine

Red wine also contains flavonoids which are similar to those found in chocolate. Flavonoids maintain the circulation of blood in the eyes by keeping them healthy.

However, even though red wine provides valuable benefits for the eyes, alcohol should still be used in moderation. Besides red wine, other products can be consumed, which will also provide necessary nutrients for the eyes.

Soy Beans

Soybeans are not only high in proteins, but they are also low in fats. Hence, these beans do not pose a risk for weight gain or obesity. They also contain fatty acids and essential nutrients, which are highly beneficial for the eyes. It is, therefore, useful to include soy into one’s diet regularly, which will increase the benefits they provide to our eyes.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Green, leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, turnip greens, and collards, cannot be left out of the list of primary foods that improve eyesight. This is because these vegetables are full of antioxidants, such as zeaxanthin and lutein, which protect the retina against damage, prevent the onset of cataracts, and decrease or even stop age-related muscular degeneration disease. These foods, therefore, become much more important as one advance in age.

Foods That Improve Eyesight

Foods That Have A Negative Impact On Eyesight

However, if you wish to gain the desired benefits from the foods mentioned above, some foods should be avoided or consumed in lesser amounts. For example, junk foods and foods with high sugar content have a drastic effect on the eyes and even reverse the effects of healthier foods. Consequently, consuming an excess amount of these particular foods may even lead to other eye problems such as glaucoma.

In Conclusion

It seems apparent that to maintain your body at optimum health, your diet should consist of a wide range of foods to collect a wide variety of essential nutrients.  Thus, you may improve your eyesight or even eliminate the risk of developing certain eye diseases by consuming a diet rich in healthy foods and nutrients.

This is the kind of book you might not necessarily find in your bookstore, but an increasing number of people are interested in finding more information about this topic. If you feel you might be concerned about the health of your eyes and how it relates to certain foods, this program might be your best option.
