Despite washing and styling your hair each morning, your hair converts back to a stringy and dirty look. Welcome to the oily hair club that millions are a member of. You should not be mad at your glands, though; they only do what they are supposed to do. The oil keeps your hair from breaking, your scalp healthy, and it can even make your hair look great and healthy. However, sometimes it gets overzealous. Thus, you need to know some natural remedies for oily hair.

Why does hair get oily?

Several things contribute to oily hair, and these are the following:

  1. Heredity – If family members suffered from oily hair, you have a good chance of having it too.
  2. Hormonal Fluctuations – If you are a teenager, it is just an awkward phase, such as acne. Usually, it will go away once your hormones are balanced. An adult woman may encounter oily hair because of their birth control or menstrual cycle.
  3. Weight Gain – When your body mass increases, oil becomes excessive.
  4. Hair Texture – People with fine hair have oiler hair than those with coarse hair because of the hair’s space on the scalp.

Out of all of the things that cause oily hair, diets do not happen to be one of them. The people who feel their diet is causing them oily hair are mistaken. Eating greasy foods will not affect the oil in your hair unless you are rubbing the food through your hair.

The good news is you can keep your oily hair under control if you follow the home remedies we provided today.

Household remedies for oily hair

Having oily hair can be a pain. However, you can manage it with things that you already have in your home. We will provide you with some essential tips to start and progress to provide you home remedies from items you have in your home.

Shampoo frequently.

When you have oily hair, shampooing your hair every day is ideal for you.

Use a quality shampoo.

It is not uncommon for shampoos to have added additives and conditioners in them. If you have oily hair, you need a quality solvent-type shampoo that will eliminate the excess grease. If you are on a budget, you can add in some drops of dishwashing detergent. Some brands that we recommend are Prell and Suave. Alternatively, most generic brand shampoos work well too. When shampoo shopping, you need to look for shampoos with a pH greater than 6.7 or are labelled for oily hair.

Rinse your hair well.

When you are rinsing the shampoo out of your hair, make sure you get all of it out. If you leave some in, you are only allowing your hair to retain oil and dirt quicker.

Skip the conditioner.

People who have oily hair should avoid conditioners. You should only use a conditioner in your hair if your ends dry out.

Limit brushing time.

Limit the number of times you brush your hair. When you run the brush through your hair, you pull the oil from your scalp into your hair.

Use an acidic rinse.

People with oily hair have had success when they rinse their hair with lemon juice or diluted vinegar when they wash their hair.

To make this, add two tablespoons of white vinegar to one cup of water. Or you can mix one cup of water with the juice from one lemon. Once you have rinsed the mixture out of your hair, then rinse again with warm water.

Cupboard remedies for oily hair

Alcohol

Any alcoholic beverage will help dry your hair out. The more concentration it contains, the better. Try taking a shot glass and putting in a few cups of water to rinse your hair. You will have to rinse out the mixture, but don’t drink it.

Cider Vinegar

Take a small water basin, add ¼ cup of cider vinegar into the water, and let your hair soak. Alternatively, you can put the mixture in a spray bottle, rinse it through your hair, and wash it out with warm water. This remedy ensures shampoo does not build up in your hair.

Tea

Dilute some tea and rinse it through your hair. Go with a tea that has tannic acid so you can reduce the oil.

Corn Starch

Put baby powder or cornstarch in your hair and brush it briskly to remove your hair oils and refresh your hair simultaneously.

Baby Powder

If your hair is greasy and you do not have time to wash it, add some baby powder or talcum and fluff it throughout the hair. It will help your hair be manageable until you have time to clean it.

Henna & Egg

Put the egg contents into a bowl and mix in three tablespoons of henna powder. Put in two tablespoons of honey and one tablespoon of olive oil and mix until it becomes pasty. Put this combination in your hair; let it sit for two hours before rinsing out and shampooing your hair.

Refrigerator remedies for oily hair

Beer

Beer will dry out the oil, clean your scalp, and provide you with healthy shining hair.

Lemon Juice

Take the juice from one lemon, combine it with one cup of water, and rinse it throughout your hair. Rinse again with warm water to help keep shampoo buildup under control.

Around the sink remedies for oily hair

Dishwashing detergent

Dish soap kills grease in your hair, just like on your pots and pans. All it takes is adding three drops to your shampoo to remove all excess oils.

Other remedies for oily hair

Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel is one of the best remedies for oily hair since it is an astringent. It slows down the oil production from your sebaceous glands. We suggest mixing witch hazel, mouthwash and either applying it directly to your scalp or using it when you shampoo your hair.

Essential Oils

Holistic treatments are great for those who have oily hair. You can use eight drops of rose geranium and lemongrass in your shampoo, and the results you see will amaze you.

Aloe Vera

Put a tablespoon of aloe vera inside of your shampoo and shampoo your hair. It helps detoxify your scalp of impurities and heals your scalp while cleansing it without the harsh chemicals.

So there you have it. We have provided you with countless home remedies for oily hair. Most of the ingredients for these remedies are probably in your home right now. Try a few of them out to see which one works the best for you, and wait for your oily hair to come back to life.
